Welcome to the New Chump Lady Site!

Welcome to the new Chump Lady site! It’s been an eventful week with a milestone birthday, a book launch, and a new website coming together in a sort of unholy convergence.

It is, of course, Tuesday (the day the Pain Stops), so fitting for new beginnings. I thought I’d make a little FAQ about what’s here and on the advice of my designer, Shelly:

“Don’t waffle.”

Shelly

Okay, no waffle (just twatwaffles…. but we’re not talking about affair partners today…) Here’s the news.

It’s still me, just rearranged differently. (Which is actually a good metaphor for having a milestone birthday.) With the new, updated book, the site needed a refresh. All the content from the old site is still here under the Archives. The home page is evergreen. To see the latest post, subscribe. Or just visit the Archives. Or hit “read blog” under my Face on the home page.

YES. But given the censorship issues with AI, my spicier, edgier stuff will live at Substack. THANK YOU to all the new subscribers. I think I confused some of you by posting yesterday while the site was down. I have NOT migrated all new content to Substack. I will be updating older posts here and creating new ones. This is still the original support site on the interwebz for leaving cheaters and gaining lives.

Do I have to subscribe to you?

That would be nice! AI is eating my lunch and I still have to pay for this place. But I understand that paywalls are a turn off. And Substack lacks anonymity. Nothing on this site is paywalled. The annoying ads still do the work, so you can read 14 years of life-saving support from Chump Nation.

My eternal gratitude for starters. At Substack, you’ll get the timely news stories I cannot cover here. (Like JESUS cheetahs.) At Patreon, you get merch and the podcast without ads. Why not just one subscription service? It’s complicated. Patreon got there first. It does podcasts well and closed community, but it’s not great for building engagement with writing. Substack excels at promoting the writing. So, extra Chump Lady content lives in separate spaces.

So much! And more is coming. But for now, check out the Starter Kit. If you’re a new chump and you don’t know how to navigate infidelity (who does? It’s a sucker punch) there’s now a step by step guide to the most helpful posts.

At the Archive, you can now search by category as well as chronologically. There’s also a generic search bar so you don’t have to Google and come back. And we’ve created new sections just on Reconciliation Skepticism and Most Popular Posts.

Also, my Golden Retriever Monty appears here. And everything is improved by adding Golden Retrievers.

How was the book launch?

I thought you’d never ask. It was awesome and I met a lot of mighty chumps. I was worried no one would show because of the Nor’Easter that blew in. But we had a great turnout and best of all, my editor Jordana came from Philly and everyone could thank her personally for championing this new edition of Leave a Cheater, Gain a Life. I also chatted with her about the new book (my working title “Coparenting with a Fuckwit: The Guide for the Rest of Us”) and that idea got a very positive reception. So stay tuned!

As fitting with every Chump Nation gathering, we bludgeoned a unicorn. Always very satisfying.

Top of the charts! It was at the #1 New Release last week on Amazon in both Divorce and Single Parenting, in print AND audio!

That’s pretty freaking amazing for a reissue. And as always, I’d be grateful for your reviews on All the Things. The book, the audiobook, the podcast. The stronger the algorithm, the more new chumps we find. (Seeing as Google doesn’t want to help search any more.)

What’s next?

Future improvements to the new Chump Lady site will be a merch section, and a Resource section that will have vetted books from this community (no RIC crap), other blogs CN approves of, and scholarly articles on infidelity, single parenting, divorce, and family court.

Oh, and video. I got a gizmo thing and will be practicing the Dark Arts of video production. So, expect more snark on Youtube soon.

Anything you’d like to see next? Let me know in the comments.

I did find it a bit difficult to find the post of the day. But it is a slick, professional looking site. Navigating it will just take some getting used to I suppose. Anyway, congrats!

For the resource list under the category of domestic abuse, I highly recommend Don Hennessy’s How He Gets Into Her Head: The Mind of the Intimate Male Abuser (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16655370-how-he-gets-into-her-head).

I’ve read nearly everything on DV and this book contains actually valid and actually groundbreaking/refreshing (to me) assertions which is a rare (to me) combination. Here are a few excerpts which particularly impressed me:

p. 42
In an abusive relationship the target woman will reveal her expectations of a prospective partner and the skilled offender will become that person. Skilled offenders are the ultimate con men. Any woman who moves from one abusive relationship into another is convinced that she is naive or stupid. The reality is that in her attempt to avoid further abuse she tends to explain her caution in terms of her previous experience. This explanation is sufficient to give the next offender guidelines as to how to present himself.

p. 43
Olivia is also a good case study in that she reveals in her journey the evidence that normal therapy is unhelpful when engaging with women who are suffering intimate abuse and who continue to be controlled by their abuser. The exploration of the womanโ€™s life-story is unnecessary. The in-depth analysis of her fears is counterproductive. The ignoring of the covert tactics of the abuser is dangerous. Olivia was always mentally and psychologically capable. If she had a fault it was in her desire to see the good in everyone. Counselling and psychotherapy can very easily burden women like Olivia with more blame. She may be led to believe that she was naive or stubborn. She can expand her guilt because she did not act sooner. She can increase her sense of self-loathing as she has it confirmed that she had some role to play in her own abuse. I have met many clients who have been in therapy and who find no relief from the mental anguish of their abuse.

One reason I rarely run into new news on DV is because non-victim-blaming DV research never gets enough funding (probably for the same reason that female social science researchers tend to drop out of publishing), so new insights on abuse that aren’t merely conjecture or recycled are mostly going to come from front lines advocates like Hennessy and/or victims themselves. Another reason why Hennessy’s insights struck me as refreshing is that, though Hennessy’s book is not brand new (2012), it tends not to come at the top of most domestic abuse survivor reading lists, which are usually topped by books like Lundy Bancroft’s Why Does He Do That and pop psych material on narcissism.

But I’d tend to trust Hennessy’s work more than Bancroft’s now that Lundy Bancroft is facing multiple allegations of abuse both from women he worked with as well as at least one former partner ( https://cryingoutforjustice.blog/2025/01/30/lundy-bancroft-is-a-predator/ ; https://kateanthony.com/podcast/episode-319-when-the-healer-harms-speaking-out-against-lundy-bancroft/).

That’s another little suggestion I’d like to make about a resource list: rather than outright “cancelling” prolific DV experts and authors who’ve been credibly alleged to commit abuse themselves such as Bancroft and forensic researcher Donald Dutton (co-author with Susan Golant of the groundbreaking The Batterer), I think their works should be listed but flagged with notes about the allegations against them and also the fact that, as we all know, abusers tend to specialize in wearing sheep’s clothing and playing rescuer/hero/savior/ally.

But some of these predators do a damn good job of playing this role and may even be using themselves as lab rats which suggests that some of their insights are “confessional” and are not only valid but have a certain value as long as their work is presented with serious caveats.

As far as the objective value of Bancroft’s work, I found none of his insights to be original and mostly seemed mined from the work of his predecessors at Emerge, the first domestic batterer intervention program in the US founded in 1977 which itself was largely built from the works of spearheads like forensic expert Evan Stark and wife and fellow researcher Anne Flitcraft. Yet Bancroft does not adequately credit these resources if he credits at all and so creates a dead end where survivors cannot do a deeper dive into decades of forensic research that fuel Bancroft’s assertions.

The one unique value I can see for Bancroft’s book is that it presents the valid ideas of others in a massively dumbed down, almost “children’s primer” tone which might make it more accessible to survivors whose bandwidths have been cramped by ongoing trauma and immediate peril. But beyond that, many others have written far better and more original works.

Anyway, food for thought as they say.

Love it! The new sight looks amazing! I read above you are working on a co-parenting book as well, which is awesome for those who have young children caught up in the mess the FW’s create.

But I was wondering if you would conisder a book or small phamplet that chumps could give their therapist? I know they are busy with lots of clients, but they need to stop letting FW’s get away with the BS they pull in therapy. And the therapists themseles need to stop their BS, too. Some of them say and do the most horrible things that make the situation way worse for chumps. These therapists need to be taught that infidelity IS abuse and to stop taking the FW’s side or stop playing Switzerland! The FW’s will never stop unless someone at least attempts to hold them accountable, and they won’t listen to their chump, but maybe a therapist. Who knows, but I would have loved to give my therapist something like that when she said, “I want to live in a world where we don’t judge others.” And another one said, “maybe he thought you’d be okay with it?” Along with a bunch of other dumb stuff!

Oh! I love those two examples! Yeah, I was pretty taken aback by what she said. And some of the others. I don’t know why they aren’t trained better on this subject.

That No Judgement theme is EVERYWHERE..then I ask..would you ask for directions at night in a city with a high homicide rate and make sure it’s 1am? Would you judge the guy who comes up to you
? Or like my elderly mother, who walked out of a bank with cash dangling out of the bible she was reading.. and she got mugged?? By a guy she described as looking like an angel? We have to make judgements every second of every day for our safety and in our best interest. I’d like some of these wide open therapist to walk into prisons FREEING EVERYONE Because Hey, they were judged!!! And invite them to lunch at their office…let’s not be judgy now!!

Great idea. It may not reach therapists who already have too much blood on their hands due to decades of coddling abusers and harming survivors. But a pamphlet might make the worst hesitate to spew the most blatantly injurious/spurious types of victim blaming at clients and might even correct course for some. Let me know if you want help hunting around for social science citations to fuel arguments.

Did I tell you my divorce attorney got a copy of LACGAL from ME as she was chumped during my divorce process?? I offered another one to my hair dresser and gave her details..but she no longer looks me in the eye..because she returned to her cheater who got her the house she had wanted. #trademyfreedomforahouse..but never mind…will keep going! Loved the entire Paris trip, loved the pants story as my waist is tiny but my hips and butt can only be appreciated in Italian streets by men with finer taste.!! You and me museum crazy. I loved every word and can picture it in my mind. I’d like to reclaim several places but I’ll stick to my new life the past 3years..solo and thrilled to be!. Thank you Tracy for your tenacity, your melodious voice that belies the tough iron clad woman inside and for being the canary in the mine screaming GO BACK don’t step one more foot into chumpdon..Thank you for answering all my questions before this update so I can stay close to you no matter what!! Just entirely too grateful for a Senior Chump expert wanting to warn the world that evil does exist but Joy comes in the morning.
